The Kurt Weill Centre was founded in Dessau in the 1990s and
occupies the Feininger House. This is the only European documentation
and information centre dedicated to the life and work of the
Dessau born composer. Together with Lyonel Feininger he was
a member of the cultural cooperative the "November Group".
The Kurt Weill Centre houses a permanent exhibition describing
the life and work of Kurt Weill. The centre also has a library,
media collection and original source documentation. Rare CDs
Kurt Weill music or Kurt Weill Society publications (Veröffentlichungen
der Kurt-Weill-Gesellschaft e.V.) are on sale at the museum
shop. The Kurt Weill Society (Kurt-Weill-Gesellschaft e.V.)
is based in the Feininger House / Kurt Weill Centre. This
society organises the internationally renowned Kurt Weill
festival held annually in Dessau.
The "Blue Book", commissioned by the German Federal
Government to nominate important cultural centres in former
East Germany, lists the Kurt Weill Centre as a cultural heritage
site of particular national import. The entry states: "The
Kurt Weill Centre is a facility that is unusual, charismatic
and worthy of support
and has gained much international
attention."
